The Chapel of St. Kinga: A Cathedral of Salt
The highlight of the Wieliczka Salt Mine is the breathtaking Chapel of St. Kinga, located 101 meters underground. This vast chamber, measuring 54 meters long, 18 meters wide, and 12 meters high, is a complete work of art carved entirely from rock salt. For over 67 years, from 1896, generations of self-taught miner-sculptors worked to create this subterranean sanctuary.
Everything within the chapel is made of salt: the intricate altars, the detailed reliefs depicting scenes from the New Testament (including a salt version of Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper"), and even the glittering chandeliers that hang from the ceiling, crafted from salt crystals. It stands as the largest underground church in the world, a testament to the faith, artistry, and incredible labour of the miners who worked these depths for centuries.
